What to Know About Buying Tires

Tire shopping can feel like alphabet soup, but a few basics make it simple:

Size: Look for a code like P225/65R17 on your tire's sidewall. It gives the width, height ratio, and wheel diameter. Your load index and speed rating are printed nearby, and they should match what your vehicle calls for.

Tread Depth: Tires have wear bars at 2/32 of an inch, the point where most tires are considered worn out. Once you can see those bars across the tread, it's time.

Age: Every tire has a four-digit date code on the sidewall showing the week and year it was made. Rubber ages even when a tire barely gets driven, so an older tire with plenty of tread may still need replacing.

Sets: Replacing all four tires together keeps handling even. If you can't, replacing them in pairs is the next best thing.
